"Walt" Whitman ( 1819 – 1892) was an American poet, essayist, and journalist. A humanist, he was a part of the transition between transcendentalism and realism, incorporating both views in his works. Whitman is among the most influential poets in the American canon, often called the father of free verse.Democratic Vistas is a major work of comparative politics and letters published by the American poet and author Walt Whitman in 1871, who was then working as a federal clerk. Whitman does much to expound on the influence of the Louisiana Purchase and expansion on the American spirit, character, and body politic (foreshadowing Frederick Jackson Turner's frontier thesis). In it, he criticizes Thomas Carlyle's Shooting Niagara: and after? and other literary works. It also comments on the Industrial Revolution and the predecessors of Modernism, which chose restraint and rationality above emotion and feelings.Whitman condemned the corruption and greed of the Gilded Age, denouncing the post-Civil War materialism that had overtaken the country. “Never was there, perhaps, more hollowness at heart than at present, and here in the United States. Genuine belief seems to have left us,” he wrote. His solution to the moral crisis was literature: "Two or three really original American poets...would give more compaction and more moral identity, (the quality to-day most needed) to these States, than all its Constitutions, legislative and judicial ties,” he declared, believing that literature would unite the country.We realize today that Whitman's Democratic Vistas was the voice of a seer, Hebraic and nation-arousing, the first clear, all-American voice after the tempest of the Civil War. His demand for a new, original voicing of America, the whole sweep of it, freed forever from provincialism, cut loose from Europe and the atmosphere of Europe, a native national literature expressing fully the new western concept of democracy, was partially answered during the period which followed, that new period distinct and individual to which his ringing document was as clearly the salutatory as had been Wordsworth’s “preface” the salutatory to the opening nineteenth century period in British literature.Yet Whitman is no idle and bragging patriot. His confidence and pride in the young republic are founded, after all, mainly upon its promise and his hopes. No one has discerned the faults of American society more clearly than he, or rebuked them with greater emphasis. Hardly any European, certainly no American, has criticised America in terms more severe than these from his “ Democratic Vistas." Whitman writes:“ Never was there, perhaps, more hollowness at heart than at present, and here in the United States. Genuine belief seems to have left us. The underlying principles of the States are not honestly believed in (for all this hectic glow and these melodramatic screamings), nor is Humanity itself believed in. What penetrating eye does not everywhere see through the mask! The spectacle is appalling. We live in an atmosphere of hypocrisy throughout. The men believe not in the women, nor the women in the men. A scornful superciliousness rules in literature. The aim of all the litterateur: is to find something to make fun of. A lot of churches, sects, are the most dismal phantasms I know,—usurp the name of religion. Conversation is a mass of badinage. From deceit in the spirit, the mother of all false deeds, the offspring is incalculable. . . . . Everywhere, in shop, street, theatre, bar-room, official chair, are pervading flippancy and vulgarity, low cunning, infidelity,-——everywhere the youth puny, impudent, toppish, prematurely ripe,-—everywhere an abnormal libidinousness, unhealthy forms, male, female, painted, padded, dyed, Chignoned, muddy complexions, bad blood, the capacity for good motherhood dleceasing or deceased; shallow notions of beauty."
